Hurricane  Irma is a strong category 4 storm tonight and all the stores near me in Southwest Florida are sold out of essentials.  Can you ever be to prepared for hurricane season? Hurricane season starts June 1st and ends November 30th. When the tropics are active it’s too late to get prepared at home. Most hurricane readiness plans advises to have 5 to 7 days of water, prepared food, baby essentials, pet supplies etc on hand. This should typically done before the first indication of an arriving storm. So commonly residents will wait until there state is under a watch before buying essentials. Thus, resulting in empty shelves and insufficient supplies.

These are a few most commonly needed supplies at a time of a hurricane:

Gas- Fill your automobile tank with gas. Also spare tanks of gas for generators etc. Let’s not forget LP Gas for grills or cooking surfaces.

Water- Fill your bath tubs with water if on a well. Have plenty of extra drinking water on hand. So often you will be on a boil only basis post- storm.

Money- Closing of banks, power outages will restrict your ability to access cash. Recommended to keep several hundred dollars on hand for emergencies.

Non Perishable Foods– Easy foods with pop tops are best. Otherwise make sure to have a hand held can opener on hand.  Peanut butter, jelly, tuna, bread are all great examples to have on hand.  However, make sure to have 5 to 7 days of food on hand.

Pet Supplies- We cannot forget our fur babies. Food, medicines and pet essentials are a must to keep them nourished as well.

Baby Supplies- Milk, formula, diapers, wipes are all needed to care for our littles ones.

Batteries, Radios, Flashlights- Power outages can last a very long time. Have enough flashlights or lanterns to safely light up your home when needed.

All in all, make a plan with your family, and stock up on essentials.  It will be helpful to gather household insurance papers, family photos and important paperwork. Video household belongings and send to family in other areas away from the storm.

Keep safe and stay in touch with family members whenever possible.  Mark yourself safe on Facebook.  That feature is awesome to inform family and friends.
